Domain assistance and Tumblr importation

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello – I’m trying to import my Tumblr to WordPress. My URL (domain purchased through Network Solutions) was previously tied to my Tumblr. I’ve detached my URL from Tumblr, and a customer service rep at Network Solutions made sure the URL was reassigned to WordPress. However, when I try to import my Tumblr over to WordPress, the Importer says it can’t – under ‘Action/Status’ it says the reason is because my Tumblr is still on an ‘Active Domain’ (aka, http://www.website.com, instead of http://www.address.tumblr.com). However, it is not on an active domain; I’ve been very thorough in making sure. I can’t figure out why the Importer still thinks that. Ideas?

  • Hi –

Thanks for getting in touch. Can you share the domain with us here so we can take a closer look.

  • DNS changes on domains can take up to 72 hours to become fully activated. Do you know when Network Solutions made that change for you?

Hello – it’s been more than 72 hours. It’s been months. Also I’m hesitant to share the URL because the blog has stories involving adult content.

  • I understand. We can send you an email to collect that information. Just reply here and type your email address in normally. It’s going to get pulled out by our software so you won’t see it once submitted. No one but the staff here will be able to see it.

Hello. [redacted] is my e-mail address. I check it every few days. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

This has nothing to do with where your domain is being pointed by your domain provider. This is happening because our importer still detects your Tumblr site as attached to a custom domain within Tumblr itself.

Can you confirm that in your Tumblr dashboard for the site the custom domain option is completely disabled?

If you’re getting the custom domain error even after switching off the domain on Tumblr’s end, disconnect in the importer, go to the Apps section in Tumblr settings and remove WordPress there: https://www.tumblr.com/settings/apps

    Then restart the import.

Let me know if it still won’t let you import the Tumblr site.

a customer service rep at Network Solutions made sure the URL was reassigned to WordPress.

Just a note that to use your own domain with a WordPress.com site requires that you upgrade to a paid plan on our end. Network Solutions might have pointed the domain to us, but it won’t show your WordPress.com site without adding our domain mapping upgrade, and them changing where the domain point also has no impact on domain settings for your Tumblr site within the Tumblr dashboard:

I’ve removed your email address from your last reply – we can see both your email address and your WordPress.com site address using our internal tools.
