Domain can’t be transferred, but can connect it instead.

    Hi,

I want to know if I ask my current provider to release my domain, and then purchase it again (through wordpress ideally) would that work? The message I am getting currently says ‘masquepen.co.uk can’t be transferred, but you can connect it instead.’ I just want to know the reason for that? They are expensive to stay with and then connect to Wordoress, so I would rather do it all in one place.

    Thanks,
    Charlotte

  • Hi there,

Unfortunately, .co.uk cannot be transferred to WordPress.com. You would need to host the domain at another host and connect the domain to the site hosted at WordPress.com:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/connect-existing-domain/

If your current domain host is expensive, I would recommend transferring the domain to a different host such as Bluehost or Go Daddy, and connecting the domain to your WordPress.com site from there.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks, I will do that!

Can I ask – if I transfer to someone like GoDaddy, and then connect it to WordPress using one of the paid plans, will I then be able to use WordPress to run an email address that is something@mydomain? Or would I do that via GoDaddy (or other)? I don’t currently have an email address @mydomain, so I would not need to transfer anything.

    Thanks!

  • Hello there,

    It would be possible.

So when the domain is connected to WordPress.com, you would need to re-add the DNS settings that are required to run the email address.

The email hosting would still be with the other provider, you would just be telling the domain to connect to that email hosting provider.
