domain confusion
-
I think I own the domain “mythonoesis.com.” When I type that into a browser, my blog comes up. However, when I go to that blog through the WordPress sites page, it give the address as https://mythonoesis.wordpress.com and tells me that a free domain is available. When I look at the offered free domains, it says that “mythonoesis.com” is taken. I think there is a bug. How do I fix it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I would ignore the message as you already have a domain at WordPress.com. Its not a bug but typical of how oddly WordPress.com does things. Things are working correctly. https://mythonoesis.wordpress.com is your underlying address which redirects to your custom domain address. If you ever decided not to renew that custom address you would still have the safety net of the free address https://mythonoesis.wordpress.com

Hi there! 👋
Thanks for posting this, and thank you, @themagicrobot, for jumping in with such a clear explanation!
To put it simply, every site created on WordPress.com automatically gets a free address that ends in .wordpress.com, in your case, mythonoesis.wordpress.com. That’s the site’s original address and will always exist in the background. Think of it as a last resort if anything happens to your domain.
You also have your own custom domain, mythonoesis.com, which is currently set as your primary address. That means visitors will only see mythonoesis.com when they go to your site, while the .wordpress.com version remains as the underlying base.
You can read more about how the primary address setting works here:
Your primary site address is the domain that people will see in their browser’s address bar when visiting your site. It is the address you use to promote your website. This guide will show you how to switch your site’s primary address, including how to change it from the .wordpress.com or .wpcomstaging.com address to your own domain. In this guideRequirementsHow to change the pSo there’s no bug, things are working just as they should! You can safely ignore the .wordpress.com address showing in your dashboard; it’s just part of how our system keeps the original site link connected behind the scenes.
Hope this clarifies. 🙂

Thanks for the informative replies! I only noticed this because there was a button offering me a free domain name. I thought I already had a domain name, so I was puzzled and looked carefully at what WordPress was displaying.

Hi @guitarsophist
You’re welcome, and I’m glad you’ve spotted the free domain credit. You can use it to register a new domain or use the credit to transfer a domain from another provider. Learn more about it here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/register-a-free-domain
