Domain cost confusion

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there. So, I just purchased a domain name and a 1 year hosting plan in too much of a hurry with the view to using that name for my WordPress site, only to find out that there is a charge to do this. 96euros for a year I think. Is this correct? Is there another way around this like asking my hosting and domain name companies to change my name to a ‘wordpress.com’? I was under the impression that wordpress is free if I have a domain name and hosting platform. I have spent enough already for a simple student blog so I am not looking to spend anymore. Any tips would be much appreciated :)

  • Hi there,

Do you want to use the domain with your WordPress.com site, http://martincrowleyinteractive.wordpress.com/? If so, we are your hosting provider, and you shouldn’t buy hosting somewhere else. The hosting plan you bought is for using the open source WordPress.org software which you’d install on your host’s servers, and has nothing at all to do with your WordPress.com site.

Hosting on WordPress.com is free – your site at http://martincrowleyinteractive.wordpress.com/ is already being hosted on our servers for free – but we charge a fee to connect a domain to that site, whether you bought the domain directly from us or somewhere else.

For a domain you already own somewhere else you’ll need the domain mapping upgrade. This is included in all our upgrade plans, including the cheaper Personal Plan at €48 a year. To use that plan, first go to My Site ->Plans to add the Personal Plan, and then go to My Site ->Domains to connect your domain here.

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

Once you’ve owned the domain for 60 days you might want to consider transferring it here completely, so you don’t have to pay another provider for the domain in addition to paying us to connect it to your site.

Please let me know if you have any more questions about this.
