Domain expired, getting site to work with new domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I host a wordpress site for a non profit and they let their domain expire. We cannot get it back and need to do a new domain. Obviously I cannot access it because even using http://ip-address/~user/wp — as soon as I click on a link, it wants to go to the actual (expired) domain (So I cannot “hack” my way into the back end this way if that makes sense?)

I know my way around PhpMYadmin … and I lease my own server, so I have root access, etc. What is the simplest way to “attach” the NEW domain name to this existing wordpress install without a lot of headaches?

As I ask this question, I realize that the ACCOUNT uses the OLD domain name so I’ll have to change that as well.

Any bumps in the right direction very much appreciated!

  • Hey there! It sounds like the site isn’t hosted here since we don’t use IPs for temp addresses.

But if you can use SQL, one of these tips will work nicely for you:

Then if you need more help with the free WordPress code, you’ll want to use these forums:

Here’s the difference between the free WordPress software and our managed hosting services:

    Cheers!
