So, the short answer is that no, you can’t really do that.
While all of our plans offer a 30 day refund policy. Domain registrations themselves only have a 48 hours refund policy.
So, what you could do is to purchase a domain and plan and try it out for a couple of weeks. Then, if you decide that WordPress.com doesn’t work for you, get a refund for the plan minus the domain registration cost.
After you’ve done that, you can point your domain to a new webhost using these instructions:

Or, if you prefer, transfer your domain registration to a new registrar with these instructions:
https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/

How much would that package refund be less the cost of domain registration?

A small addition to the previous comment – it’s not that WordPress.com wouldn’t suit me, but I’d like to see if it pays off financially or not.

The price of the custom domain depends on its TLD (extension), you can check those prices here:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
Once you know the price of the domain you would like to register, you can do the math :).

Also, note that you can upgrade the plan and keep using the free subdomain and only register a custom domain later on when you’re sure about the plan.
