domain mapping

Hi, I have a 1&1 account and a WordPress account.

I am unfamiliar with website design and was under the impression that WordPress could be downloaded for free. My plan was to download it and start playing around with the features before purchasing any kind of plan.
    1&1 says:
Log in to your WordPress account and select your website or blog.
Click Add Domain in the Domains section.
However, WordPress says I need to choose to map my domain name or transfer/map. Is there a free option? I’d like to keep the website name. Also on 1&1 the status of my domain is:
    WordPress.com
    ns1.wordpress.com, ns2.wordpress.com, ns3.wordpress.com
which makes me confused as it seems like I already have it? I really just want to play around with website design features
    Thank you

  • Hi there,

The open source WordPress software found on WordPress.org can be downloaded for free and install on your own server, or that of a hosting provider like 1&1. If you want to use that version of WordPress, you’ll either need to be running your own server, or you’ll have to purchase a hosting plan from 1&1 so you can install WordPress on their servers.

For help with that version of WordPress you can ask in https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

You are posting in the forums for WordPress.com. We are not the same thing as the WordPress software. We are a hosting provider, like 1&1, but where we use our own version of the WordPress software to let you build a site. To use your own domain on WordPress.com requires that you upgrade to one of our paid plans.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
