Domain Mapping
-
This probably sounds like a really stupid question, but I want to make sure I do this right so I don’t end up wasting money.
I want to close my old website, and make a wordpress site into my new portfolio site. The problem is, a lot of people have my e-mail address which is tied to my previous, quite expensive web hosting. What I would like to do, is stop having my current website hosted by my current provider, and then move to having it hosted by wordpress. Then, I will use Zoho mail to use my current e-mail address.
When I buy ‘domain mapping’ does that mean that wordpress is hosting the site, and my old hosting ends, or does it just mean that I’m being allowed to use the domain that I already have, which I would also have to keep paying for?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You will be hosted at WordPress.COM – you will not need to continue with your old host.
mean that I’m being allowed to use the domain that I already have, which I would also have to keep paying for?
You will need to keep paying someone to register your existing domain name – WordPress.COM can’t accept incoming domain name transfers – you will need to map your existing domain name to a blog here, see below:

See also for email issues:

That should get you started – good luck

Ok so, to clarify in my head –
if I map my blahblah.com, it’ll make it so that I can use that address for my blog. I can cancel my hosting with the current host of blahblah.com, and that will still work fine because I will be paying to use that address for my blog?
Sorry I’m a bit dense about this.

You can cancel your old hosting
You CAN’T cancel your domain name registration
You may or may not need to pay someone to make your email work – depends on which of several options you choose
-
Okay cool, so I’ll cancel my hosting but see if I can continue to simply pay for the domain name registration, and then map it to my blog. Then I can use zoho mail to make (email visible only to moderators and staff) which I current have as part of my hosting… and that should all work?

Should work
Don’t cancel your old hosting etc until you have your new site here up and running – and the domain mapping working
