Domain Mapping – defaultwebpage.cgi Issue
-
Hi Folks
I paid for and added a domain mapping to my blog account. I set up the name servers on the domain registrar side to point to WP (I have to assume it is correct since WP only wanted to move to the payment stage after I set it up). Long store short : if I try and use the mapped domain then it tries to open the link below :
http://firstlight1media.wordpress.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi
Can anyone provide some insight here ?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
We need the mapped URL to be of any help.
http://firstlight1media.wordpress.com/ loads fine for me but is not mapped –
It can take 24 to 72 hours for the changes to migrate to the far corners of the internet – but we need the domain name you have registered to provide you with accurate help.
-
-
I was redirected to http://firstlight1media.wordpress.com/ but not mapped to –
A whois search looks odd to me and the name servers do not seem to be pointed to WordPress.COM and it also looks like a billing issue is active – you should check with your registrar.
Did you have a zone record added for your new domain name first-light.co.za if not you will need one added for the domain mapping to work.
I will flag this for staff to add the zone record if you have not had one added.
-
PS – without the zone record I don’t think your registrar will allow the name servers to be changed –
These are the instructions you need to use: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Hi AuxClass
Yep, that is the instructions I followed. I changed the name servers at my registrar and after that I could “add” the domain to the WP blog. I see this comment now :
“your registrar may require us to add a “Zone Record” on the WordPress.com servers before the name servers can be updated” So I suspect maybe this is involved ? The fact that I do get redirected seems to indicate working, or does redirect and mapping boil down to two different things ?Regards

From these lines it seems that WP was able to verify that the NS was set correctly ? :
After the name server change takes effect …. click the Add domain to blog button. If the name servers are verified, you will be prompted to pay for the upgrade and complete the process.
Also, if I try and make the first-light.co.za domain the primary then the browser moans about too many redirects ? So there seems to be some re-directs going on … I did not add any extra CNAMES or anything to the WP DNS records (no custom DNS entries).
Regards

Domain mapping and redirect are two different things –
redirect is what you seem to have now – you see the http://firstlight1media.wordpress.com/ when you visit your site
If you have the domain mapping working your visitors will see: http://www.first-light.co.za in the address bar of the browser.

Things that go *bump* in the night ;)
Any idea when a staff member would be able to assist ? It seems that everybody is off till the 29th ?
Find it difficult to imagine that in this day and age a top-flight company can close their Support department (and it’s not the silly season) ?
Anyways, not-so-quietly waiting in the corner ;)
-
I have flagged this for staff attention.
Support is not really closed – the staff is still supporting some 25,000,000 blogs – I have seen the staff helping in the forum this morning –

I know ;)
WordPress has always been a quality act, not slagging them at all ! #justsaying

Your domain has no nameservers set. Per the guide at http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ they need to be:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM -
Hi Mac
Firstly, thanks fo the reply however I am not sure what is up since, using a NS lookup tool (http://enc.com.au/itools/nslookup.php) it is clear that NameServers had been configured ?
Nameserver ns3.wordpress.com ns3.wordpress.com 64.34.177.159
Nameserver ns2.wordpress.com ns2.wordpress.com 76.74.159.137
Nameserver ns1.wordpress.com ns1.wordpress.com 72.233.69.14Might have been in the propagation period ….
It is still hitting the defaultwebpage.cgi page though ? Can you maybe assist ?
Regards
-
In addition, if I set the mapped domain (or the domain that I believe is mapped but is obviously not) as the primary (as other posts on the forums seems to suggest) then I get a Redirect Loop error when trying to browse to it ….

You need to use the format staff-blorbo gave you – the format you posted should choke things.
-
Seems I should rather ask for a refund since this does not seem to work ?
Who do I contact regarding a refund ?
-
The nameservers should be set as this with no IP addresses:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMIf you’d like, I can refund this.

Hi macmanx
They are set with no ip addresses…. I just pasted the results from a nameserver lookup. The domain does definitely points to WP’s NameServers, but it is the internal zone records on the WP side that seems to be incorrect, since a redirection instead pf a mapping is in effect ?

It looks like we just needed to wait for it to propagate.
http://first-light.co.za/ appears to be working properly.
It can take domain changes up to 72 hours (though usually much less) to propagate to your ISP, though in this case it took much longer. Unfortunately, we have no control over this as it all depends on how often your ISP refreshes their DNS cache.
