Domain mapping, then transferring?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a site currently on SquareSpace and intend to transfer it to WordPress. However my time is limited and I’ll probably do it slowly over a few weeks. Should I map my domain name to WordPress and transfer it definitely afterwards? Or better, can I transfer just the contents of the site under a spaceholder domain name without mapping or transferring the domain name for now? Thanks.

  • Hi there,

I’d recommend migrating your content before you switch the domain to us. I’m not familiar with how Squarespace works in this regard, but any export file you get from them will likely mention images at the current domain, so the files still need to be accessible at that domain during the import or else our importer won’t be able to fetch them.

You already have a “spaceholder domain”, http://juliavidile.wordpress.com/, the free WordPress.com address that was created for your site when you created the site. That’s yours to use for as long as the site exists, and you can get everything set up there and leave switching the domain until the very last step if you prefer.

If you want to map the domain before you transfer you can do that as well. That way the domain will already start showing your WordPress.com site even while the transfer is still in progress.
