Domain mapping versus transfer

  I have recently bought a dot com domain with Google but I am planning to transfer to WordPress when I can. I am a little confused by the domain mapping in the meantime, is this when you redirect to a new site? If I ‘map’ my domain with WordPress, will all of my posts on my current blog move to my new site? If I pay for the premium £4 a month subscription, will I be able to transfer my domain once the probation period is finished?

  Also the £4 a month package comes with a free domain for a year, as I have already bought it with Google is this a feature I will lose out on or will it transfer to 2020?

  Hi there,

  Whether you map or transfer your existing domain, you will need to purchase a WordPress.com plan. The difference is who you want to host your domain. If you transfer the domain to WordPress.com, we’ll manage the domain. You’ll pay for the mapping and the plan here (domain is included within the plan price for the first year).

  But, if you keep the domain at your current host and map the domain to WordPress.com, you current host will continue to manage the domain and you’ll need to pay them for hosting your domain.

  Mapping will still be included in the £4 a month subscription the first year, so you are still saving for mapping, but the advantage of transferring the domain over is that the registration would be also included in the price of the plan during the first year, which means you wouldn’t have to pay for hosting elsewhere.

  No, mapping only has to do with the domain, not the site and its contents. You would have to import the site content over from your current site to your WordPress.com site. Here is more information on that process:
