  Do I have to purchase a domain name on an external site in order to own it, even if I have a premium WordPress.com account?

  Hi there,

  With a Premium Plan, you receive a domain credit to either map a domain you already have registered elsewhere, or you can definitely register and map a domain with us. So, you don’t need an external host to register and own a domain.
