  Setting up my account, how can I use my existing domain name w/o either transferring from my current registrar to wp or paying the extra registration fee to have my DNS mapped?

  As was explained earlier you need to purchase an upgraded plan at WordPress.com if you don’t want a free site ending in .wordpress.com and wish to map or transfer a domain you already own to a WordPress.com site. see: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-names-131/
