  I am having trouble deciphering which route I need to take. I own a domain name through GoDaddy. Do I need to transfer it to WordPress or just do WP through GoDaddy?

  It’s entirely up to you. You can stay where you are or you can move here. You can’t transfer a domain here (or anywhere) until you’ve owned it for more than 60 days. You could map your GoDaddy domain to a WordPress.com site here though if you purchased an upgraded WordPress.com plan.
