  Why does WP say domain name not available, but Bluehost and hostgator say otherwise?

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  It’s possible a domain name is available as domainname.com or domainname.org or whatever, but not as domainname.wordpress.com.
  What domain name are you talking about?

  Hi there!

  As staartmees said above, it’s possible you may be looking at the .wordpress.com address while the domain (without the WordPress.com address) is available for registration. Can you tell us exactly which address you wanted?

  If you want to register a custom domain on your site (like yourname.com), you will need to upgrade to a paid plan first. You can see our plans and pricing here: https://wordpress.com/pricing

  Once you’ve upgraded (or during the site creation process), you can register a new domain. If you only want to register a new domain and create a site later, please check “Registering a domain without creating a site.”
