domain name not available
-
I have an old domain held by another host. The domain has now come to the end of its year subscription and I would now like to use the same .co.uk that is on the old site. It does not show up in the list of available options.
What can I do?

You can’t transfer a domain name to WordPress.COM – you can renew the domain name with your current registrar then map the domain name to your blog here – since it is a .co.uk you will need staff help to add a zone record before you can map the domain name to your blog – it you post the domain name in the forum someone will flag it for the staff to help you

Thanks auxclass. If I renew the domain with the other provider then I’ll have to pay the $80 for them to host the domain name then I’ll be paying wordpress for the mapping as well. I was hoping the domain name would be released back to the world after I stopped paying for it? I can get .com .org etc. but would really like the .co.uk. Any ideas when or if domains get released?

Find a cheaper registrar then – most registrars and web hosts allow a domain name to be registered without being hosted –
Don’t let the domain name back into the wild – it can take 60 to 90 days after the registration expires before the name can be registered by anyone – and many times a squatter grabs the domain name an holds it for ransom – there is a 60 day period after a domain name has been renewed or registered when it can’t be transferred to another registrar (it can be pointed to any host during that time so you can still use the name for a site)
Ask your registrar / host if they have just a registration package that does not include hosting

Ok, this is making more sense to me now. I’ll give it a try with the old host and see what they can do.
Thanks for the help.
I may be back.
