Domain name says temp domain.

I tried to load the Better Search Replace to fix this. It does not work. WHY is there zero support? How can I fix this? I tried to get support through the plugin but it has the same support, through a forum. So, I’d appreciate someone helping me change how my address reads so it doesn’t say “Not secure/temp domain”

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You’ll have support for the site blmaxwellwriter.com, as it’s a site on a paid WordPress.com plan. That domain is secure and not a temporary domain. Where is the temp domain showing? It sounds a bit like Bluehost’s addresses before your domain is connected, and maybe you’re switching hosts?

This is what they told me. I contacted them earlier to see which side the problem was on.
ask them to update the A record to account IP.
    A record:
    @ points to 162.241.253.201
    CNAME record:
    www points to blmaxwellwriter.com

  • OK! So you’ll want to change blmaxwellwriter.com to point to Bluehost instead? There’s a good page on changing DNS here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/custom-dns/

-Click My site > Domains (http://wordpress.com/domains/manage/blmaxwellwriter.com)
    -Select blmaxwellwriter.com
    -Select Name servers & DNS
    -Click DNS Records
    -In the spaces, add this:
    Type: A
    Name: blank
    Points to: 162.241.253.201
-Click Add New DNS Record to save.

There’s already a wildcard CNAME, so you don’t need to add that. Once the domain name is updated, you’ll be able to set it up for your Bluehost site instead of the temp.

While you have a WordPress.com plan, you can get help here privately if you prefer: https://wordpress.com/help/contact

Once you move to Bluehost, that’s WordPress.org. WordPress.com doesn’t provide support for WordPress.org sites, but you can get help with your domain as long as it’s registered via this site. For WordPress.org help, you’ll get any assistance in the WordPress.org forums.

So I tried a different browser and it’s letting me onto the site. Does it not work on Chrome? Becuase it does not open at all.

  • The domain blmaxwellwriter.com is registered here at WordPress.com. Your site that you seem to be building is not. I don’t know that address yet, but I’m guessing it has box####.temp.domains/~ and a username. That’s a Bluehost site.

For any support of that site, you’ll use Bluehost and WordPress.org. For help on your domain blmaxwellwriter.com, WordPress.com can help. I don’t see the domain A record added. If you are stuck on this, please let me know.

  • To additionally clear up confusion on getting help for each site, here’s the differences with WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
    https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

If you prefer to get support from WordPress.com staff, I would usually recommend to stay with WordPress.com. The forum support community at WordPress.org is very active, however.

I contacted Bluhost becuase I wasn’t sure if it was the host or the domain holder who needed to change that info they told me it was the domain holder. I did enter that info, restarted, then I deleted cookies and cache becuase WP.com would not load. It loads now, and I made the changes you suggested. But it still says temp domain. It has the same address. http://box5817.temp.domains/~blmaxwel/
They said its on your side.

You can contact the WordPress.com and ask them to update the A record to account IP.
    A record:
    @ points to 162.241.253.201
    CNAME record:
    www points to blmaxwellwriter.com
And I did try to do this through email but it would not allow it.

AWesome now those actions have totally undone what I worked on so my site is back to nothing.

  • You won’t be able to make blmaxwellwriter.com the domain on your Bluehost site until the A record is added to point the domain to that hosting.

I’ll tag this for staff to see if they can help you add the A record, as blmaxwellwriter.com is still not pointing to Bluehost.

Once the domain is pointed to your hosting, you’ll be able to change your temp URL.

  • Hi @blmaxwell – There are two steps to complete your goal.

Step 1. Adjust your domain’s settings to point to Bluehost servers.

Step 2. Once the above is complete, replace your site’s “temporary URL” with your actual domain ‘blmaxwellwriter.com’.

For Step 1: Will you need instructions from us on how to add the Bluehost IP address to your domains settings? Or, is this something you know how to do already? (What’s important to remember is that changes to DNS settings can take up to a few hours to complete.)

For Step 2: Once Step 1 is complete, you will need to follow the instructions at the two links below to replace your temp URL with ‘blmaxwellwriter.com’.

    1. Instructions from Bluehost here.

    2. wpbeginner.com provides more detailed instructions and screenshots here in “Method 1”.

Let us know what you need, based on the information above, and we’ll try to help further. Thanks so much for your patience and persistence so far. Domains and DNS can be quite tricky and downright frustrating. We’re here to help.
