Domain Name Transfer
-
I recently went through the process of transferring a domain name from another provider to my WordPress site.
I have followed the instructions on WordPress and I have just reached the part of the process where I must unlock the domain name from the provider and enter a domain transfer authorisation code given to me by the other provider.
Domain shows as ‘unlocked’ and the authorisation code shows as ‘valid’. Then when I click the ‘continue’ button, WordPress wants to charge me. I am unable to remove the items that are being charged to me from the cart.
I have paid for the new domain name with the other provider, and the original WordPress site was free, so I cannot understand where a fee of £96 per year is coming from.
Please help explain. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi casalondrina,
Then when I click the ‘continue’ button, WordPress wants to charge me.
That’s correct, you’ll need a paid plan in order to transfer a domain to WordPress.com:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
This will cover the cost of the transfer and automatically renew the domain for another year once the process is complete. You can choose any of our paid plans though — Personal, Premium or Business and then select the transfer option for the domain.

It’s still possible to create a free site with an address containing “.wordpress.com” but custom domains are only available through paid plans. Once the transfer is complete, you won’t need to pay your current provider to renew the domain each year (only us).
Come back to me if you have any questions.
