Domain names registered with GoDaddy

I did my initial domain registration with GoDaddy. Spent a bunch of money doing so. What are the ramifications of taking my registration away from them to use this WordPress site for website design and hosting?

  • Hi there,

To move your domain to us, you’ll need to create a WordPress.com site and upgrade it to one of our paid plans. Transferring the domain is included in the cost of the plan, though, along with an additional year’s renewal on the domain. So you won’t lose any of the time on the domain that you already paid GoDaddy for, and the existing registration will be extended for one year. You’ll need to ask GoDaddy about any refund you might be eligible for on your hosting plan itself.

The plan will need to be renewed every year, as well the domain at an additional cost (currently $18 a year for .com domains), once it next expires. What features you’ll have with us will depend on what plan you choose, but all WordPress.com plans, including free, comes with automatic software updates, security and spam protection included.

The version of WordPress we use on WordPress.com does have some limitations compared to what you’d be using with GoDaddy, though. You can see a comparison of the biggest differences here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

With that information you should be able to make a comparison to what you currently have at GoDaddy, but let me know if you have any more questions.
