Domain no longer connected to WordPress account. How do I get it back?
-
I’ll start by saying this: I’m not the most technical so I may misspeak so bear with me. Here’s what happened:
A few years ago I bought a domain at HostGator. I instantly built it on WordPress. It has always lived on WordPress.
I update it a few times a year with a few blogs but it’s nothing too serious, enough for me to practice with longform writing and affiliate linking. This week I went to log in and realized the domain was no longer associated with my WordPress account – my only account. When I went to the site as a visitor, clicking anything prompted an immediate file download, all but confirming my suspicion someone stole my account. But when I log into HostGator, it points to the domain living on WordPress.
I can’t get help from WordPress becase they say I don’t have an active domain – which I did until it was, I believe, stolen. I chatted with someone from HostGator who told me they couldn’t help me because it was a WordPress issue. I tried chatting with the WordPress AI who told me the initial issue was that the nameserver was pointing back to HostGator so it gave me new nameservers to point back to (ns1.wordpress.com, ns2.wordpress.com, and ns3.wordpress.com).
I updated these and waited 5 days, expecting to see a fix. But now when I go to my domain I don’t even see the page, I get the “This site can’t be reached. DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN” error.
I’m stuck. I don’t know what else to do. I can’t get support from anyone. Any ideas? -
Hi Bethany,
Thank you for reaching out about this and explaining everything in such detail. As this is related to domain names and you do have a WordPress.com account, I’ve gone ahead and emailed you directly so that we can take a look together at this. Let’s keep chatting via email!
