Domain Options

I am looking to switch our church’s website from another provider to WordPress. Ideally, I would like to create the website prior to leaving the current provider, so the website doesn’t have to be down or under construction. Is there a way I can do this or will I have to transfer the domain first to create my account and website?

Yep :) This is a common question.
What you’ll do is set the new WordPress.com site up with one of our free options. Once the site is completely finished, and ready to go, you’ll connect the domain to the free site.

You may want to keep the free site private, or hidden, until the time comes to launch. That is just a basic settings adjustment. See here:

1. Map it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
2. Transfer it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/Either will work fine, and there’s not a wrong choice. Write back with any other questions.
