Domain Ownership Release
-
Hi WordPress/Forums, I hope you are doing well.
Essentially, I purchased a plan with you a few months ago, and included was the domain. attached onto this request. After some reconsidering, I cancelled the service expecting the domain to be released after a short time, but it has now been a few months and the domain still hasn’t been released.
It has been multiple months since cancelling the plan, but is there anyway way to provoke your third party contractor to release the domain? Thank you for your time, and have a nice day

Hi @danielsmusic2017, apologies! I’m trying to see why the domain didn’t release properly, and whether it can be simply released at this point. We’ll update you soon.
-
I will add I’m pretty sure we can have you re-purchase the domain with some manual work on this side, so if you want to do that, let us know and we’ll set it up. You’d still be able to point it to your new host.
I’m just checking to see if there are other options. With it being a weekend, the folks who have answers to this may not be online right now, but we’ll update you when we have more info.
Thanks!

Hi there,
It would certainly be most preferable for the domain to be released, but just for reference, how much would WordPress want for the domain to be registered through them? Thanks!
And no problem regarding response time, this was already quicker than expected so thank you, and enjoy the remainder of your weekend!

Hi there,
The cost for one year of registration is $18 USD as noted here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
However, as @supernovia has mentioned above, our domains team will have more info once they are in on Monday, so we’re happy to update you as we know more, and can discuss options then.
Thanks for your patience!

Thanks for your patience! Here’s what we found:
– The registrar for .co.uk domains isn’t bound by ICANN rules. While they do typically release a domain right away, they don’t necessarily have to. I still don’t know why this one didn’t release. But once it’s in this parked state we don’t really have a way on our side to release it through the API.
– But we can unpark the domain, and would just need to recapture payment for it. I’m sending an invoice now, and as soon as that’s paid, someone here would work on unparking the domain for you. From there you can log in and point it to whatever service you’d like, and transfer out as you’d like. If you want us to cancel the invoice, let us know.
– Your other option as I understand it is to reach out to Nominet services and ask them to get the domain released for you: https://www.nominet.uk/domain-support/online-services/
Again, I’ll set up your invoice now so you’ll have a quick way to resolve this. Just let us know if you’d rather not go that route.
Thanks again for your patience on this!

Okay, Danny. That invoice is on its way now.
If you pay it, someone here will get notification and get it unparked for you. You’d want to log in, update it to point to your new host, and you’ll have it working as soon as the internet catches up with the changes (typically a few hours).
Or, you can reach out to Nominet directly. You’re welcome to reach out to them first to see what it would take to cancel the domain, and depending on any fees they may charge and how long they take, that may be your preferable option.
The invoice here can wait until you decide. Just let us know if you’d like it cancelled.
Cheers, and enjoy this weekend!

@danielsmusic2017, just letting you know the invoice is still out there. If you’d like to pay it, we should be able to get the domain back for you, or you can reach out to Nominet. Let us know your preference. We can delete the invoice if you’d like.

Hi there, apologies for the belated response, I have been away on holiday for a while.
Just to confirm, would payin the invoice [unparking the domain] provide me with access to the domain according to here, and would that purchase last until 1 year after originally purchasing the domain?
Thanks!
Danny

Hi Danny, correct; once restored, the expiration date would still be one year from the original purchase date. And you can point it anywhere you’d like using our DNS or other name servers:

https://wordpress.com/support/domains/change-name-servers/I hope this helps!

Hi Danny,
Thank you for your payment. I’ve restored the domain, and you’ll be able to manage it through your dashboard. Here’s a direct link to the Domains page:
