Domain Payment
-
I bought my domain through iPage for five years. However I’m wanting to just transfer it to WP and I’m seeing $18 to transfer. 1. If I already paid for my domain, how do I waive that fee? 2. If there’s no way to waive it, should I just do a domain mapping? I realized I don’t really need a hosted site since I’m pretty tech savvy when it comes to this stuff in case anyone is wondering. Thanks

Hi,
1. If I already paid for my domain, how do I waive that fee?
There is no way to avoid paying that $18 when transferring. All registrars require the purchase of an additional year of registration when transferring a domain. While perhaps annoying, it isn’t really a “fee” as you are moving your domains expiration date out a year (from 3/1/2022 to 3/1/2023 for example)
If there’s no way to waive it, should I just do a domain mapping?
Domain Mapping will work just fine for your site. Functionally, it really makes no difference choosing between mapping or transferring. Both work equally well and will send users to your site when they enter your domain into their browser.
What it really comes down to is if you have opinions on the ease of keeping your site billing in one place (one bill from WordPress.com vs a bill from WordPress.com and a bill from your domain registrar). Or if you have a particular reason to want to use an external registrar (perhaps you have many domains and want to keep them all registered in the same place).

Thank you for your quick reply.
I went to the domain mapping but there seems to be a fee for some plans. What exactly are these for? Is this just like WP hosting my site compared to another webhost?

Using a custom domain here, that includes domain mapping, does require a paid plan, any paid plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
