Domain pointing to external hosting provider

Since a year or so, our website has been hosted externally (outside of WordPress.com), so our WordPress.com site has gone effectively defunct. However, we’ve still got the domain protestantsekerkvilvoorde.org registered with WordPress.com. Would it be possible to redirect this domain to our external hosting provider and if so, how do I go about it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

According to whois info that domain redirects to your external hosting, https://digital.com/best-web-hosting/who-is/#search=protestantsekerkvilvoorde.org. However there doesn’t seem to be a site on that server.

That’s exactly the point. I tried redirecting, but obviously I’m doing something wrong. In this case, I changed the A record to the IP address which should be our website’s IP address but sadly, it doesn’t work that way…..

  • Hi @wtsvilvoorde

Who is your new host? Can you share with us the domain name server (NS) addresses they recommend for connecting domains to your hosting account?

I see a lot of recent changes (currently you set the domain back to us again, for example) but I see you added these previously. Are they correct as provided by your host?

    ns1.b-smarthosting.net
    ns2.b-smarthosting.net
    ns3.b-smarthosting.net

If so we can get those added for you but please note that once the new settings are added it can be several hours until they “take effect” so it’s normal to see some inconsistent behavior for a few hours until then.

    Thanks for the additional info!

ns1.b-smarthosting.net and ns2.b-smarthosting.net are the name servers indicated by my hosting provider. However, when I changed the name servers into these two (ns3.b-smarthosting.net was a mere trial), after a few hours my browser indicated that protestantsekerkvilvoorde.org could not be reached. Now could that be because these name servers are already pointing to our other domain for this website? This is fairly new stuff for me, TBH…..

Additional info: our website is currently accessible via protestantsekerkvilvoorde.be. Now, since we are in Belgium, we obviously want to retain this domain. What I am looking for is a way to have protestantsekerkvilvoorde.org point to the website as well, so as to have it accessible via both domains.

  • Hello there,

Ok, so does the hosting provider recommend 2 name servers of three?

If 2, adding something like ns3.b-smarthosting.net would break a site, resulting in what you’re seeing when visiting the site.

Can you share any documentation from the hosting provider on how to connect domains from outside of their service? We can gut check the settings in place.

    Many thanks.
