Domain status after canceling plan
-
Dear WordPress Officers,
Hello.
I registered a domain name last October in WordPress.com but downgraded my plan after that. Now I am using another host and wish to use the same name.
However, it seems I cannot manage that domain using my WordPress dashboard, or re-apply it from other domain providers (they showed that address is taken).
In this case, do I have to wait until it expires to reclaim it? In that case, I will use another similar domain name.
Thank you very much for your time and help. -
Hello there,
Happy to help you with this.
Can you confirm the domain you require help with so that we can take a closer look please.
It’s not recommended to cancel it with a view to re-register the domain – mainly because this isn’t always possible.
If the domain is active, you can point the domain to another provider through the use of custom DNS settings.
Please see how to do this here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/custom-dns/
Many thanks in advance.

Dear WordPress Officer,
Wow! I did not expect that you were replying so fast ;)
The domain was: uviccssa.ca
It seems I lost control of it, and there is no domain accessible from my dashboard right now.
Thank you again for your time and help! -
It looks like you’ve canceled the domain name, meaning you no longer own it.
Please let us know which of these options works best for you:
Wait: You can wait about five days from cancellation for the domain to be released. So long as no one else buys it before you do, you can purchase it again with another provider.
Repurchase the Domain: We can send an invoice and restore the domain. You’ll be able to point it to a new host as soon as it’s restored, then transfer the registration after 60 days.
Repurchase a Plan: To host your site here after all, buy a plan, skip the domain option, then update us here.

Dear Officer,
Hello.
I canceled the domain last October, but it is not available yet.
Yes, I am willing to re-purchase the domain it is available again.
Thank you very much for your help! -
I have sent a payment request for the total of $18 to the email address on your account. Once the payment is sent, please reply here to let us know, and we’ll recover the domain.
-
Hello Officer,
The payment has been completed.
Can I also ask how will I be charged every year, please?
I believe this 18$ is the charge to recover the domain instead of the yearly subscription fee, right?
Thank you for your help! -
Dear Officer,
Hello.
I finished the transaction hours ago but the domain does not show up in my manage panel yet.
Can I ask what am I supposed to do now?
Thanks ;) -
I have restored the domain back to your account.
Please note that you will not be able to set this address as your primary without a paid plan.

This is a yearly registration fee for .ca domains is $15; you can see the full pricing list here:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/.
Domains are free during the first year if you buy a paid plan so if you decide to go with that, we can refund the registration fee.

Dear Officer,
Hello.
It seems that I cannot register the domain since I cannot found it when I search for available domains.
The message was “This domain is already mapped to a WordPress.com site.”
It seems like vanished from my sight lol.
Can you please combine the information from my profile and the domain name and tell me how can I obtain this domain name?
Thank you very much for your help! -
By the way, I have hosted my website using AWS Lightsail, and I only need the domain name for the DNS service.
Thank you again! -

I’m a little confused; what are you trying to achieve now?
We have restored the domain to your account, so there is no need to register it; you already own it.
If you’d like to point that domain to a site hosted elsewhere, you can change the nameservers as explained here:Does that help?

Hello Officer,
Sorry for any confusion.
Yes, I was trying to perform the exact same operation from the link you provided.
However, there is no domain name that shows up on my Domains page (My Site → Manage → Domains).
There was no domain list but a search button.
Hope this can explain my situation.
Thank you very much for your help! -
It can take up to five days for domains to get released. We don’t actually have any control over that timing. Please write back in a few days if you’re still not able to register it as new.
