Domain stuck in redirect loop

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I have registered a domain service for my blog http://cloudventuresblog.wordpress.com/, and tried to point the domain cloud-ventures.com. I have amended the DNS to point to WordPress.

When I first set it up, it half works ok, in that it re-directs to http://cloudventuresblog.wordpress.com/, but obviously the whole point of the service is that it stays as cloud-ventures.com, so I then also set the WordPress ‘primary domain’ setting to be this cloud-ventures.com domain as well.

However this then creates a site crash where it reports “This webpage has a redirect loop”, so I am a bit stuck in a corner as to how to set this up..

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks, Neil.

    Hi Neil,

Domain names get stored on your computer in a “DNS cache” so browsers can load websites faster. Sometimes when a change is made to a domain name, such as your Domain Mapping settings on WordPress.com, the previous website is stored on your computer, and you can’t load the new website at the same domain. That’s what causes the redirect loop that you see.

These stored domains are usually updated every 48-–72 hours on your computer, but you can force it to update sooner by flushing your computer’s DNS cache.

You’ll need to start by setting your custom domain as the primary domain for your blog, and then you can try flushing your DNS cache. You can also just wait a bit, and the problem should resolve itself.

Please let me know if you have any questions. :)

    Hi Rachel

I tried that. I flushed the DNS, then I tried the domain cloud-ventures.com again but got the same error.

I presume this is because I have set it so that cloud-ventures.com is relayed to cloudventuresblog.wordpress.com, which then sends it back to cloud-ventures.com

    Neil.

    Hi Neil,

It’s possible that the cloudventuresblog.wordpress.com domain is getting cached further up (e.g. with your ISP) and thus isn’t refreshed when you flush your local DNS cache. However, the redirect loop will go away with time after you set your domain to be the primary one.
