Domain Transfer???

Hi there, I have currently taken on a project for a family friend of mine to build a WordPress website from scratch. He has already purchased a domain through GoDaddy but I am a bit puzzled on how to properly conduct the transfer. Please advise? Do I need to build the website first and then transfer it? Help!

  • Hi there,

That is not an issue – what you could do is create a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. You are assigned a .wordpress.com or a .home.blog subdomain whenever you create a site with WordPress.com, so you can just use that as the domain as you build the site and determine whether or not this is the platform you want to use. Once you are done developing the site, you can make the decision to transfer the domain over:

    map and existing domain:

Or even creating a new one:

    Hope this helps,

Thank you, I think I left out some specifics however. Can I map my current domain to WordPress temporarily up until the 60 day domain lock is up on GoDaddy and then transfer my domain to WordPress once the 60 days is up? I’m just currently wondering about how much that is going to cost within a 60 day period and if it is a good idea. My customer is looking to get this website up and running within the next two weeks or so.

Thank you. Is this going to affect my emails? I’m currently looking to switch over my family business website before handling the friends website. We have an email address provided to us through Wix and we are currently using it. I’m just wondering if everything is going to transfer smoothly, as in my email address, along with my domain? I’m very new to this and I do not want to make the same mistakes as previous account holders have. Is there something I need to do in order to save my previously emails that have been sent and received from that address? Sorry that these questions keep popping up! I really don’t want to mess anything up.

Elaborating: We bought two websites with domains and emails through wix and unfortunately it is not working out for us. We really want to transfer everything to WordPress but we bought the domains and our @mydomain.com G Suite email addresses through Wix. I want to transfer one of our domains to WordPress as soon as possible, but I’m worried about potentially losing access to that email account. Is it possible that I could just keep paying for it through Wix or maybe the same addresses through WordPress or Google? If someone could assist me with this it would really help me out.

  • The domain mapping option can take up to 72 hours for the DNS changes to become fully affective across the globe. During that time, yes, you will have an email issue. My suggestion would be to set up an auto responder ahead of time and make a note of the delay on your site.

The domain transfer will have a bigger effect as it takes 5 days to complete.

With both options we do our best to pull in the email DNS with the domain. It’s not 100% accurate and sometimes you have to manually add the records back to the domain.
