  On WordPress.com’s managed hosting environment there are 2 options for using a custom domain.

  1. mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
  2. transfer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

  If the domain registration is transferred over to us, then all of your site-related stuff is one place. That’s a big benefit to some folks.

  Here’s a current list of the extensions we’re able to accept as a transfer. If your extension is not on that list you’d need to use mapping.
