  Is it possible to transfer an existing domain from another provider to WordPress? Or is mapping it the only choice?

  Mapping is your only choice – WordPress.COM is not set up to accept incoming domain name transfers – if you don’t like your current registrar you can move to another registrar and still map the domain name to your blog here at WordPress.COM
