domain transfer

What are the pros/cons of leaving the domain name with godaddy versus transfer?

  • Hi there,

Generally speaking there is no difference: Either method will allow your WordPress.com site to use a custom address without “wordpress.com” in the URL.

Mostly, the decision comes down to what is most convenient to you.

    • If this is your only domain, it can be difficult to remember that you need to renew your site in two places (renew your plan here, and your domain at GoDaddy) so often folks will transfer their domain to us to consolidate their billing.
    • If you manage several domains with GoDaddy, you are already used to paying them to renew your domains. In that event it likely makes sense to leave your domain there and use the “domain connection” tool we offer on this end to link your URL to your new site.

One thing to consider is that a free domain is included in your Pro plan. Since you already have a domain instead we would waive the transfer fee (normally we charge for this) and once the transfer is complete we will bump the expiry date by one year, giving you a free year of domain registration that you would normally pay if you leave the domain with GoDaddy.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

  • Hi again,

I forgot to mention that this is the support forum for our free sites, but your Pro Plan upgrade includes priority live chat support that you can access 24 hours a day (except on major holidays)

With this in mind, you are encouraged to reach out to us here, and we can take a closer look at your issue in real-time. No need to wait for a reply in the forums: https://wordpress.com/help/contact
