Domain Transfer

Disclaimer: I am absolutely ignorant about a domain, website hosting, website building etc. For me, it all just means ‘clicking somewhere’. Pardon me for my ignorance.

That said, I recently purchased the domain name ‘thesignboard.co.in’ through my exploration of Google My Business. It was part of setting up a cyber presence for my career counselling centre. I would be designing a website soon through WordPress and was doing window shopping here when I came to a page that read, ‘Transfer your domain away from your current registrar.’ and a line further down, ‘Extends registration by one year’

Am I to understand that if I transfer the domain (which I purchased through Google a few days back) to WordPress.com, I would be getting the registration term extended to May 2021? That seems like a steal! What have I misuynderstood?

  • Hi –

We will be happy to answer all the questions you have. It’s overwhelming to get started with no previous experience. But, we know that feeling, because everyone started at the beginning once-upon-a-time.

Yes, you can transfer your domain to WordPress.com. Doing that would mean that we take over as your domain registrar. The domain has to be 60 days old for that to be possible. That’s an ICANN regulation we have no control over.

The other option for using thesignboard.co.in at WordPress.com is to map it. That would keep the domain registered at GoDaddy and point it to WordPress.com. When someone visits the domain in their browser they see the WordPress.com version of your site. There’s no age requirement with this option. Each year you would need to renew the domain registration from Google and the mapping from us.

Both options will require that the personal plan (or higher) be added to your account. Those details and features are at https://wordpress.com/plans/

The plan includes your domain. Yes, the domain registration would be extended with a transfer. They include additional customization features. We also provide support and are always nearby whenever you have questions or need help.

Everything I have just explained is pertaining to WordPress.com. That’s very different form using the WordPress installation. The WordPress installation would require that you pay for a separate host and it is much more hands on. The help comes through free forums that are patrolled by volunteers. WordPress.com is a managed environment, which means that we offer your hosting, support, and also the nitty-gritty-details that go in to having a successful site. Things like back ups, SEO, security, and so on…

I’d suggest looking over https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ to give you an idea of which option will be best for your project and personal experience level.

Write back with more follow up questions :)
