domain transfer/mapping

Hello! We are starting the journey of creating our own website and have run into a snag unfortunately early on in the process. I purchased the domain ‘actionpotentialcenter.com’ at $10 a year, for 10 years, through namecheap.com. I don’t want to pay for more than what i have already paid. What is the best course of action?

  • Hi –

Great question. First, let’s talk about the 2 different versions of WordPress.

    1. WordPress.com. That’s me :) We’re a managed environment which means we include your hosting and support for the site. In order to use a custom domain you’ll need a paid plan. Those are at https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Each option will include your domain mapping. That’s what you’ll use to point that domain to WordPress.com.

Those steps are outlined in this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    2. WordPress.org. This is the open source WordPress software. It’s more hands on from your side. You would be responsible to fix the broken site, trouble shoot errors, update plugins, themes, and software on your own. This is free, but you would need to find a hosting provider. There’s not a dedicated company behind it, instead, it is maintained by volunteers. You would get help in the WordPress.org community forums.

This page outlines the major differences between using WordPress.com and WordPress.org: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Let me know if you have any more questions about this information.
