Domain transfer question – can WordPress host my domain

    I’m working on a new website for a business that recently changed ownership. The former owner is hosting the site through DreamHost and has given me an auth code to transfer it. Can I do that without setting up and paying for a DreamHost account? Or will the actual hosting stay with Dreamhost?

    If the later, will the old website go down when I transfer the domain from his DreamHost account to mine, and then have Dreamhost update my DNS settings?

    While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the name registered at your current registrar (or transfer it to another of your choosing). You can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain, as explained here:
