Domain transfer to WordPress.com or theme transfer to WordPress.org?

Hi, I have a domain in WordPress.org but recently I realised it would make my life much easier if I could develop my site in a theme available at WordPress.com, and I have been advancing much faster there than in the past 5 years in WordPress.org. I would still want to learn about the features in WordPress.org, and perhaps keep the flexibility they warrant, but it seems the fact that I need time to actually become hands on is slowing me down considerably. Would you then advise me to transfer my domain to WordPress.com or the theme I have been working on there to WordPress.org? Thank you so much.

  • Hi there!

You are welcome to transfer or map your domain to your WordPress.com site.

If you decide to map it – your domain will stay with the current registrar, and you’ll need to go to their site to manage anything domain-related.

If you transfer the domain to WordPress.com, we’ll be your new registrar. This way, you’ll manage everything from one place, and you’ll be able to reach support with any domain related-issues :)

Here you can find more information: https://wordpress.com/support/domain-mapping-vs-domain-transfer/.

Also, note that on WordPress.com’s Business plan, you can use plugins and third-party themes, just as you would on WordPress.org:
