domain upgrade

After an upgrade from free to personal I show the new address as http://www.jwalters.press.com but the link won’t work and the old one still does. It’s been about three days since the shift. Does it take longer than that? I’m trying to use the new address as a link for my followers to find me . . . so far no luck.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The domain you registered is jwalters.press, not jwalters.press.com.
Your site is loading fine for me at https://jwalters.press/

To use jwalters.press.com, you’ll need to own the domain, press.com, as that’s the only way you’d be able to add a subdomain on that domain. The domain, press.com, has been registered with publicdomainregistry.com since 2001.

without a .com on the end does that mean Google won’t put it on their search engine? . . . If so I once had an address for free that worked on the search engine but now since I upgraded I don’t? . . . anyway I am confused as to why, because I read the particulars for the personal upgrade to say I had a new .com address included. So what could I do now?

  • A .com extension is not required to appear in search engines. Google will index your site no matter what domain you are using.

The reason your site isn’t appearing in results right now is because Google first needs to re-index it at the new address. This would have happened no matter what domain you picked.

It will take Google a few weeks to re-index your content at the new address, and then you should get the same amount of search traffic that you had before.
