  What happens if you do not renew your membership for your domain? Does the website disappear? Or can you just no longer post anything?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi there,

  If you have a custom domain and you don’t renew it, we’ll show a warning on your site for a few weeks until the domain is deleted, and then your site just goes back to using the free *.wordpress.com address. Your content won’t be lost, and you’ll still be able to publish new posts.

  Thanks. I was curious. I’m hesitant about a custom domain because of consistency. But the name i want to use isnt available for free. I started a blog with the name. Then deleted it. And it’s still not showing up as available. But it’s available for the custom. So I was just hesitant because I don’t want the content to disappear if I fall short. Or waste my money.

  We only provide WordPress.com subdomains, like http://marleyswayblog.wordpress.com/, for free. If you register one of those, it’s your to use for as long as you want, but if you delete it, you won’t be able to register it again at a later time.

  Custom domains, on the other hand, you need to buy, but it’s only possible to buy it for a year at a time, so it’s more a lease than a purchase if you want to get technical about it. And because it’s not permanent, we have the free address as well where your content actually live, so the content is safe no matter what you do to the custom domain. As long as you don’t delete the free one :)

  Thanks. So I have played with some names and will probably stick to the free site. However, if I wanted to change to a custom domain in the future, can I change the current free name (i.e. from marleyswayblog.wordpress.com to marleysway.com)? Also, am I able to get a custom domain under the personal plan? Or does it have to be premium? I was very confused when attempting to purchase a custom domain because it kept coming up marleyswayblog.wordpress.com instead of marleysway.com which is what I desire.

  You can, yes. The new domain will just be laid over your existing free address, so no need to migrate your content or followers – except for the domain appearing in your browser changing, everything else on the site will remain exactly as before.

  You can. For Personal, you’ll first need to go to My Site ->Plans to add the plan, and then you can add the domain afterwards.

  If the domain is available it should be listed on the domains search. If, when you decide to upgrade, you still have this problem, please let us know.
