Domains

    Hi there!

In my naivety, I registered a site & domain through wordpress.com, thinking it was the same as wordpress.org. By doing this, I also purchased a domain (olloydhooker.com), which is what I really needed.

I cancelled and got a refund, and then planned to go ahead and just buy the domain I wanted, and not the hosting space. However, I have now realised that this means the domain is now unavailable to buy.

Is there now a waiting period before the domain is available to purchase again, or is it gone for good? I cancelled within 30 mins of purchasing, so I thought that this would be possible to grab again. I know there were warnings about losing it, but I presumed this meant that someone else could buy before me, not that it would be gone for good!

Thanks for your help; i’m really very new at this and i’m hoping that taking a wrong step at my first attempt hasn’t screwed me over!

    Hi bub12345,

I cancelled and got a refund, and then planned to go ahead and just buy the domain I wanted, and not the hosting space. However, I have now realised that this means the domain is now unavailable to buy.

Cancelling a domain means giving up ownership, so it’s not something we recommend doing if you need to use it elsewhere.

There are couple of options here:

    1. If we act quickly, I can restore olloydhooker.com.

bub12345.wordpress.com has been deleted so I’ll need you to create a new site for me restore the domain back to. The domain cost has been refunded, which means I’ll need to send a payment request for that cost ($26).

Newly registered domains can be transferred 60 days after the registration date but I can help point olloydhooker.com to your WordPress.org site in the meantime.

    2. Because the domain was cancelled so quickly, it should be released back into the pool of available domains in around 5 days time. This is a riskier option because there is no guarantee you will be the first to register olloydhooker.com once it has been released.

Please let me know which option you prefer and if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    Hi Gemma,

Thank you for your prompt reply You’ve been a huge help clarifying how it all works, so thank you for that.

I’m aware it’s a risk but I think i’m going to go for option 2, as I need some time to sort out my hosting and to finish off the site build. I doubt it’s a particularly popular domain name so hopefully that means nobody will pick it up when it’s back available!

    Thanks again!
