Don’t Want to Purchase Domain

    I want to create a blog using the wordpress.com domain. Over a decade ago (the last time I used WordPress.com), this was so simple. But every time I try to do it now, WordPress forces me to try and purchase a domain. Does WordPress no longer provide free sub-domains? If so, how can I circumvent step 5 in the sign up process that forces me to purchase a domain?

    Free sites are still available at https://wordpress.com/start/domains. Just type a word or phrase and scroll down past the two paid domains to see the free option. It’s best to spend some time experimenting with the address you’d like, perhaps adding another word (and perhaps removing all or most of the numbers) to get a free address you’re happy with.
