Doubt about domain hosting

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!
I want to build a new website with WordPress but my domain is currently hosted with Godaddy. I just paid a new two-year contract with them.
If I move my domain with WordPress, am I gonna lose those two years?
If so, my best option would be mapping it with WordPress?

    Thanks!

    Hi ogracida,

I want to build a new website with WordPress but my domain is currently hosted with Godaddy.

There are two type of WordPress:

    • WordPress.com: where sites are created and hosted here.
    • WordPress.org: where WordPress.org software is installed on another host (like GoDaddy) and maintained by you.

We have some more information about the differences here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

If so, my best option would be mapping it with WordPress?

Existing domains can be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com — both options would require a paid plan.

With mapping, the domain will remain registered through GoDaddy and renewed through them.

If you want to use GoDaddy as a host, you would need to install WordPress.org software on their servers and connect your domain to the site manually — the domain mapping upgrade only applies to sites hosted on WordPress.com, so it wouldn’t be needed in this case.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
