I have a free tier blog. I want to download my posts to use in another endeavor. I already have an XML export. I am trying to find a way to download the posts in a more readable document based format. I can not use the print to pdf plugins because it is free tier. Thanks for any help.

  • Hi @kenhagerman, thanks for reaching out!

Since you’re using the free WordPress.com plan and can’t install plugins directly on your site, here are a few options you can consider for converting your posts into a more readable document format.

Option 1: Import the XML into another WordPress environment

A convenient option is my.wordpress.net, a free service from WordPress.org that lets you run a fully functional WordPress site directly in your browser with a simple setup process.

You can import your XML export into that environment and then install a PDF export plugin, such as Print My Blog or another PDF/print plugin, to generate document-friendly versions of your posts.

Instructions for importing a WordPress export can be found here:

If you want to move content from any WordPress site to any WordPress.com site, use the Import Content option. This option imports a copy of your pages, posts, and media to your site, but not plugins, themes, or other design elements. In this guide, you will learn how to import content from another WordPress site. In this guideVideo tutorialStep 1: Obtain the export fileStep 2:

This is likely the most efficient approach if you have a large number of posts to export.

Option 2: Save individual posts as PDFs from your browser

If your posts are publicly accessible, you can open each post and use your browser’s built-in Print → Save as PDF feature.

You can also try browser extensions that create cleaner PDF versions of web pages:

This approach works best if you only need to export a small number of posts.

Option 3: Use ChatGPT to reformat the export

If your XML export file is relatively small, you may be able to upload it to ChatGPT and ask it to extract and reformat your content into a document-friendly format.

    For example:

Extract all blog posts from this WordPress export and create a single PDF-ready document with the posts ordered by publication date. Include post titles, publication dates, categories, and full post content.

    Or:

Extract all blog posts from this WordPress XML export and create separate PDF-ready documents for each post.

You can also request DOCX or Markdown output if those formats better suit your needs.

Please note that very large XML exports may need to be split into smaller files before uploading.

I hope one of these options helps. If you can let us know approximately how many posts you’re working with, we can suggest the most efficient approach for your situation.
