Draft Content Disappeared
-
I was working on a blog post this afternoon and it was auto-saving every few minutes. Everything was fine until I copied and pasted one of my photos to a different spot in the post. The photo caption didn’t copy so I deleted it and went to add a new photo caption. When I clicked the caption button, all of the content in the blog disappeared. The undo button was grayed out so I couldn’t use it. I closed the post and reopened it, but it was still blank.
I looked under History and it had a version from earlier today, but none of the newer things I had added in the last hour were there (the work was done after 2PM on 7/3/19). I’m super bummed because I did a lot of work that is now gone.
Is there another way I can recover it?
I am working on the site ourmctravels.com and the post Venice, Italy.
Also, this is not the first time adding a photo caption has deleted all of my content. Is this common or am I doing something wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi –
Are you working from your browser or the WordPress app?
Were you working on
Venice, Italyor a different post? I am happy to take a look for any older revisions that are available. This shouldn’t happen – but if it ever does happen again you can try using Edit > Undo (or the Windows equivalent) to see if it will reverse the content deletion.

It looks like it’s back now, did you re-write it?
When something like this happens, I generally recommend checking the revisions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/page-post-revisions/
As long as it’s auto-saving, there should be a revision you can restore from.

The one there now was an earlier edition of the post. It is missing the content I added this afternoon. It was the last one listed in my history so I restored it. I’m guessing my recent work is gone for good then… :(

I don’t see any trace of other work, so I’m afraid something must have happened to it then, I’m sorry. :(

Okay, I was just editing this same post. I made triple sure it was auto saving and then started to add a photo caption. When I did, my entire post disappeared AGAIN, leaving only the photo I was trying to caption. Once again it would not let me undo and when I check the history, the last edit was from 4 days ago. Why does this keep happening?

Also, I tried deleting the picture and re-adding it, and it is still doing the same thing when I try to add a caption. Luckily, I backed my post up this time on Google drive but this is very frustrating.

It is called Venice, Italy. I deleted that post and created a new one with the same title which is now published. The old one is still in my deleted items. For some reason I couldn’t add captions on that post, but the new post seemed fine.
Is there anything I should avoid doing to keep that from happening again?

If this happens again then it would be very helpful to us if you can outline the exact steps you have taken to get to the adding captions option. That will help us try to replicate the behavior and see what is going on.

I think I figured out the commonality. It seems to only happen if I add a photo to the blog post, caption it and then try to move the photo.
When I went to copy and paste the photo, the caption didn’t move with it. So I deleted the caption (by hitting delete on the keyboard) and then tried to add a new caption. That is when everything vanished. I’m fairly certain that is what happened to me before as well. For some reason, even if I delete the photo in question and re-add it to the same blog post, it still does that. I had to create a new post and re-add the photo to it. Now everything seems fine.
Hopefully that helps. Thanks for listening to me rant the last few days. ;)
