Dropping My Website
-
Hi. We had our website hosted by ipage. We’ve opted to not renew our site and are letting the domain name registration lapse. How will this affect my wordpress account/site? Do I need to have a domain name and/or a website associated with my blog site?

Are you using a domain registered with ipage for a WordPress.com site? Or are you hoping to use a domain you had registered with ipage for your WordPress.com site in the future?
If so, you should not cancel the domain registration or let it expire. That runs a risk of, at best, not allowing you to register the domain again for a few months. And at worst, it risks someone else swiping the domain out from under you before you can register it again.

Just to be clear, while it may seem like you should be able to register a domain right after it expires, that isn’t the case I’m afraid. Domain expiration is a rather long process:

I’ll see if I can answer you like I know what I’m talking about 😊 So, I have a wordpress.com account that’s my name and under that is a wordpress.com blog that uses the website name. My account is krstruble and I “own” the blog godsnomads.com/blog.
I don’t mind retaining the domain registry but I’m canceling hosting of godsnomads.org with ipage. So when the website goes away, will the blog also go away since there won’t be a godsnomads.org anymore? -
You have a self-hosted WordPress site (commonly called a WordPress.ORG site). If you cancel your webhosting with ipage, yes, your site will disappear.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
WordPress.org has complete documentation and support sites for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at http://codex.wordpress.org/ and http://wordpress.org/support/ Your webhost’s support team is another good resource.
