Hi — I’m looking to use wordpress for a simple website for my illustrated children’s book. I will sell the book there (2 products: hard cover and soft), but in terms of the look/feel of the page, it will showcase artwork from the book and provide info on the book/author/illustrator/testimonials/perhaps newsletter signup. In other words, I DON’T want it to feel like an online store.
From what I’ve read, I gather I’ll be using WooCommerce for this. Is that true? Do I have to use a WooCommerce theme, or is it possible to pick another theme and still integrate WooCommerce?

Hi there,
Since you have just two products (hardcover book and softcover book), it may not make sense to set up an entire eCommerce site in this case. Instead, you may consider using the Payments Block (one for each product) to create a simple button that visitors can click on to make a purchase.

If I go this route, would it be possible for a customer to order hard and softcover without having to go through 2 different transactions? (EG hardcover quantity 2, softcover quantity 1, and then ONE button to complete the entire order) From the tutorial you sent (which is great, by the way) I’m thinking that might not be possible.
Also, if I go this route, it sounds like I can use ANY theme. (If I were to do WooCommerce, do I understand correctly that I have to use one of those themes?)

The downside of the Payments Button is that there is not an integrated “shopping cart” like you are describing. For that I would actually recommend WooCommerce instead, which would have no issue with managing such a purchase.

Actually this is not required. I would say that if you were setting up a traditional eCommerce site with a homepage that is dominated by product listings, an WooCommerce-specific theme is helpful.
However WooCommerce itself can work with any theme, and it’s a simple matter to create a few products, and then manually set up your own minimal “shop” page with products displayed using WooCommerce blocks.
Or if you want to be even less obvious than that you can use WooCommerce blocks on any page or post on your site, a nice way to slip a small product listing for your books within the text of a blog post, for example.
