Originally… yes but I decided to delete extra blogs to try and narrow down the source. That process fixed the problem.

The source of what? There are always several less drastic options to deleting a site. For example, in this case, you could have edited or even deleted any contact forms displayed in the site, or made the site private while looking into a solution for whatever problems a contact form, or multiple forms, might have been causing you.
Various options are listed near the top of the Delete Site support page. However, note that the warning opening the support page,
Deleting a site permanently removes it and you’ll never be able to re-use its WordPress.com address (such as yourgroovysite.wordpress.com).
should be updated. For the last couple of years or so, the Recycling Blog Addresses support page has included the note:
Sites already deleted by their authors two or more years ago may become available again, if they present no username or other technical conflicts.
