Email address change

I am eliminating the email address currently associated with my wordpress.com account. It was originally associated with a blog site I had on wordpress.com which is still there but not active. I now have a WordPress.org site with a different email address associated with it. I am going to eliminate the older email address and use the new email address for both but when I try to update it, it says that email is already in use and it won’t update! Please help!
