Email address change issues

I’ve been trying to change my email address as I no longer use or have access to the email address i used when setting up my blog. I want to change it from (email visible only to moderators and staff) to (email visible only to moderators and staff) – I was able to add the gmail address as a recovery email address but when i tried to change my primary email address i got a message in a red box telling me that (email visible only to moderators and staff) is already in use – as far as I am aware I have no other account which uses this address – all of my blogs are linked together on this account. Can you please advise?

The Gmail address is already connected to another username account, registered about a year ago. For security reasons I cannot tell you what username is associated with that email address.
If you can’t remember having any prior usernames, please do the following: Log out of this account, and clear your browser cache and cookies.
Enter your Gmail address into our Password Reset form. Click the link to reset the password, and once you’ve accessed the other account, visit the account settings page to see the username for that account.

To use the Gmail address with this account, you’ll first need to change that account’s email to something else to free up that address. Gmail has a nice trick you can use for this, though. You can append text to a Gmail address to create aliases. Gmail sees them as the same address, but our system doesn’t, so technically you can then use the same Gmail for multiple WordPress.com accounts.
For example, myname[at]gmail.com, myname+blog1[at]gmail.com and myname+blog2[at]gmail.com will all send emails to the same Gmail inbox. But you can use each one for a different account on WordPress.com.
