email not working

I want help with the default email function. It worked fine until I updated my security certificate with Go Daddy. Email checker plugin says mail is being sent just fine. No mail arrives. When I tried to configure ‘WP Mail SMTP’ plugin following the steps to for gmail. No errors from Google, however back in WordPress I get a message when I ‘send test email’ that the ‘site is experiencing technical difficulties, check your admin email for instructions’ Which is truly idiotic because I am not getting any email at all from wordpress so I’m stuck in a stupid-loop. Any help with PHP mail congfig?
