    TIA.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Of which email notifications exactly are you speaking? Notifications of new posts on sites you follow? Notifications of comments on your site? Or notifications of changes to posts on your own site? “Email post changes” which you mention in the topic title refers to this last one.

If you’re speaking of the Email Post Changes feature, those emails are supposed to show the HTML, as their purpose is to show you what changes were made to both the content and the HTML formatting of the post.

    Hi,

It is the ‘Email Post Changes’ under the Settings feature that sends HTML code in the email. The emails are being received but there is code showing in the email.
It is not useful to have the HTML codes displaying so I have had to turn off this feature.

    Regards.

  • As I said above, those emails are supposed to show the HTML, as their purpose is to show you, the site owner, what changes were made to posts on your site by any other admins, editors or authors who have access to them.

They are not notifications for new posts created on your site, and no follower on your site receives those, only you and other contributors on your site that you specify in the settings for this feature.

As you are the only user on your site, there’s no reason to have this feature enabled, as you are the only one who are able to make changes to your posts.

I do know that this feature has nothing to do with new posts. I do want email updates for post/page changes.

I want to add other users to the notification list but I can’t do so until the proper format of the messages are sent. If the feature is not working, I’m asking why not as it is a feature I want to use.

    Regards.

  • Hi @aplcxteam,

This is working as designed. Post changes are intended to show you the same thing you’ll see in post revisions. You’ll see the code, just like you would here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/page-post-revisions/#comparing-revisions

HTML changes impact the way the post is displayed, even if the words on the post are not changed. A picture might be changed, for example. Or someone might add some creative formatting.

An email would not be able to properly convey the impact of those changes if we just showed you changed words. So we show you the changes to the HTML.

If that is not the feature you’re looking for, can you tell us more about how you’re intending to use this? Maybe we can point you to another way to accomplish what you’re after.

    Thanks for your response.

I thought the email post changes would look like the following capture:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/email-post-changes/

In the above example, there are no html codes beyond the “a href” codes.

If it looked like the example from this documentation, it would certainly be exactly what I was looking for.

  • That’s all the HTML in the post with that screenshot.

If you have more complex HTML, it will show that, too.

My email to post updates have all of the HTML text and all of the HTML codes. It is unreadable. The previous example I mentioned is readable and admins, editors, etc. can receive an email and view the updated areas of the post or page.

    Dan

  • The example in the support page is more readable because there’s not a lot of HTML formatting in that particular post. No other reason.

There is no way to change how this works.

  • Unknown's avatar

Agreed. So my original question is, why can’t I get the emails from my site to be readable and not include every single html tag?

  • Hi Dan –

Can you grab a screen shot of what you’re seeing? Add that screen shot to the media library on aplcx.wordpress.com so we can take a look. Thanks.

  • Unknown's avatar

I added a screen capture to my media folder. The file is titled, capture.png

    Thanks.

  • The post change emails always include comparison of the raw HTML, there is no way to disable that.

HTML is a critical component of how your post _looks_ to the public, so HTML is included in the comparison of changes.

  • Unknown's avatar

When you state ‘raw HTML’ do you mean the actual html codes? If so, the feature is pointless as no one can read the html code.

Secondly, this example from the support site:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/email-post-changes/

Does not include the html code except for the “ code.

I’m not sure if my explanation of my issue is clear as I can’t include a screen capture with this post of what the emails look like.

    Thanks.

  • The screenshot in the document also shows HTML code throughout. It has been this way since launch, and was included at the time by popular request.

I understand what you’re asking for, but it is not something we can provide. The emails have always included the full post content, HTML and all.

Ok. I understand. Why then does the url on the support site not show html code?

Also, since it is a private site, is there any other tool I can use to update users of post/page changes? I can’t use Mailchimp as there is no RSS feed on a private site.

    Thanks.

  • Why then does the url on the support site not show html code?

In the screenshot on that support page https://en-support.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/email-post-changes.png anything in < and > tags are HTML.

The screenshot there has less HTML than yours, but that’s normal. Some posts have more formatting than others, and HTML defines that formatting.

is there any other tool I can use to update users of post/page changes?

No, this is the only tool we have available for sharing post changes.
