Email subscribers vs registered users (subscriber)

I’ve been receiving emails from wordpress about user registrations and upon looking at my website’s settings to see my subscribers I saw that there’s the ‘team’ header and ‘e-mail subscribers’ header. All of the people within the ‘team’ group are listed as subscribers. My questions are:
What’s the difference between the two?
Do the registered users (Team) still get emailed when I put up new posts?
If these people didn’t use the e-mail subscription widget then how did they subscribe to the site?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Your site is using the self-hosted WordPress.org software, it’s not a WordPress.com site.

On self-hosted sites there is a setting that allows visitors to create their own user accounts on the site. That is what’s generating the New User registration emails you’re getting. They’re not coming form “wordpress”, they’re coming from your site.

Log into the WP-Admin dashboard and go to Settings ->General. Make sure you uncheck the box next to the option to have users create their own accounts.

Then go to Users ->All Users, and remove anyone you didn’t add/shouldn’t be there.

“Subscriber” users aren’t followers on your site. Followers are listed under My Site ->People ->Followers and Email Followers. Subscribers are users who have access to the site’s dashboard.
