email to people following my blog
-
Several people who have signed up to follow my blog tell me that the message they receive is unreadable, with text buried in scrambled in 0s and 1s. How can I modify the email template to include a standard line at the top saying something like, “If you’re having trouble viewing this message, please read it on the website: (followed by the website address).”
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That sounds very odd. Is there any consistency in the people that have reported that to you? Do they all use a particular email provider (gmail, hotmail, etc)? Are these people who are following via email alone? Or are they WordPress.com users?

Thanks for taking this on! I’ve tried to find consistency between the people with problems, but some are using tablets and some are using computers. I’m not sure about the email provider — though I could do nothing about that in any case. There are 2 things the people following the blog have in common: 1. they are a group of grandmothers, most without a great deal of ease with internet communication (They won’t be WordPress.com users.) 2. they are all following the blog (which the group uses for announcements) via email. I want to insert above each message the common line (“click here to read this post on the website” or the equivalent) so that they know what to do when a post arrives looking like (as they say) “gobbledegook”.

Hi there,
As for the email itself, while it shouldn’t be turning up in 0’s and 1’s, it could very much depend on the email client. It’s a bit difficult to troubleshoot without more information. Would it be possible to get the exact details of the email client, post, and screenshots?
I want to insert above each message the common line (“click here to read this post on the website” or the equivalent) so that they know what to do when a post arrives looking like (as they say) “gobbledegook”.
They should be taken to your site if they click on the title of the post in the email. However, you can add a read more button by only putting a summary of the post within the email. This is also good to make sure readers are clicking into your site (stats purposes).
You can do this by going to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard. Where it says “For each article in a feed, show” select Summary and click on Save Changes at the bottom.
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

I think you’ve given me the solution. I’ll tell members that if they can’t read the email message, they should click on the title of the post to be taken to the site (though I’ll have to convey this information through direct contact). In this case, the simplest solution is the best one.

Hi, Grace. Sorry — I do have another question, because this solution apparently doesn’t work for those having the problem. (It works for me, but I’m not having problems!) One member has just forwarded me what she received: a page of 09=09=09 etc with the message buried within it. Even the url of the website, at the end of the message, is broken by an equals sign so doesn’t work. Every one of the members who has problems has an email address @shaw.ca. But so do I, and most of the others who have no problems at all. What do you suggest?

Hi there,
Please ask the member who are having problems to check their email settings. If they’re set to plain text, that may explain the issue. They should be set to rich text or HTML.
Let me know if that helps!
